Little-Known Benefits to Homeownership in Katy

Katy Real Estate

Perks to Homeownership in Katy, TX

If you are, or would like to be, a homeowner in Katy, TX, you should know about the benefits that come with homeownership. There are many that are well-known, such as increased net worth, financial stability, a place to decorate and design as you please, more living space, and so on. However, as your Katy real estate agent, I’d like to introduce you to a few more benefits you may not know about!

Recent studies have shown that there are lesser-known benefits to Katy homeownership that are just as important and impactful. Check out this list:

Education

The latest Social Benefits of Homeownership and Stable Housing study found that children of homeowners tend to achieve more educationally than children of non-owners. They stay in school longer, get better grades, had fewer behavioral problems and go on to make more money with higher levels of education.

Civic Involvement

The same study found that homeowners put more effort into the stability of their neighborhoods and communities than renters, as they stay longer and have financial stakes on the line. They maintain their residence better, which improves the overall community appeal. Homeowners are also more politically active, know who their local school board representatives are, volunteer more, attend church in higher numbers, interact with neighbors more, and so on.

Health

The study also found that homeownership increases homeowners’ health! Homeowners tend to live in a cleaner environment and experience fewer cases of asthma, exposure to toxic substances, injuries and mental health issues. Homeowners also report higher levels of life satisfaction and happiness, higher self-esteem and higher perceived control over their lives.  Overall, homeowners are 2.5 to 3.1 percent more likely to have good health than renters.

So, aside from the fact that homeownership in Katy gives you a place to settle down and grow roots, a place to grow and raise a family, and a means to financial stability and increased net worth, it also has a whole slew of other benefits that you may not have considered before!

Katy is a city located in Harris, Fort Bend and Waller Counties in the U.S. state of Texas, within the Houston–Sugar Land–Baytown metropolitan area. The population was 11,775 at the 2000 census.

Katy, suburb of Houston, Texas, is named for the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad (commonly referred to as the "K-T Railroad", now a part of Union Pacific) that ran through Katy in the 19th century. Katy was once known as Cane Island. The name is derived from Cane Island Creek which runs just west of downtown. Cane Creek is a branch of Buffalo Bayou. The origins of the name Cane Island are believed to be from the fact that Katy was once a major sugar cane producer and rice producer. To commermorate the importance of rice to the Katy community, the Chamber of Commerce holds the Rice Harvest Festival every second weekend of October.

Katy was recently the location of one of the ten large red balloons in the DARPA Network Challenge on December 5, 2009. The balloon was stationed in Katy Park.

In 2009 the Gadberry Group named Katy as one of nine "9 from 2009" most notable high growth areas in the United States.
After a low income apartment complex was proposed for development in an adjacent unincorporated area, in 2010 the Katy City Council passed a resolution stating that the development would decrease property values.[5] The plans for the complex were canceled.
