How to Help Flood Victims in Katy, TX

Hurricane Harvey blew through Katy, TX and the greater Houston area this week, causing devastating flooding, deaths, injuries and damage to the area. My heart goes out to all affected victims.

Within the City of Katy, water coated parts of Highway 90 and flooded local homes and businesses. There are still several locations along the Katy Freeway that have high water. As your Katy real estate agent, I am here to help fill you in on what you need to know as the rescue stage slowly evolves into the recovery stage.

Mayor Chuck Brawner shared information on debris removal for Katy homeowners. As soon as the water resides, here are the debris removal guidelines for homeowners within the City of Katy:

  • Do not place debris near or on trees, poles or other structures. This makes removal difficult. Keep away from fire hydrants and meters.
  • Separate debris into six categories: Electronics, large appliances, hazardous waste, vegetative debris, construction debris and household garbage.
  • Place debris at curbside but do not block roadway with it. It will not be picked up if these guidelines are not met.

Here is a helpful chart:

You can also view this chart and Mayor Brawner’s video here.

If you need shelter, there are 62 total shelters across Harris County, with an estimated total of 12,700 individuals using these facilities. A list of currently open facilities can be found at www.readyharris.org.

If you’d like to volunteer, call the American Red Cross at 866-526-8300, Volunteer Houston at 281-656-1533, or visit Texas Gulf Coast VOAD at www.txgulfcoastvoad.org. If you have boats or working vehicles, the City of Katy is asking that you help nearby neighbors if you can safely do so.

If you’d like to donate food or belongings to families in need, bring donations to CrossPoint Community Church at 700 Westgreen Boulevard in Katy, or to The Fellowship at 22765 Westheimber Parkway in Katy.

The outpouring of love and support has been amazing for the entire Houston area! Let’s keep it up and help our neighbors as much as we can through this troubling time. Thank you to all of the rescue efforts that we have seen over the past few days, from local police forces to residents with boats, rafts, etc., who gave their part to help in the rescue efforts.

Stay strong, Katy! We will get through this together.

Trendy Design Options for Your Katy, TX Home

marble countertopOne of the biggest perks of owning a Katy home is that you can design it however you please! If you like to keep up with home decorating trends, allow me to offer you some suggestions for this year. As a Katy real estate agent, I think it’s important to note that trends come and go, so if you’re going to upgrade your Katy home with some of these, make sure they are ones that you will really enjoy!

Here are a few that are trending right now, via RISMedia:

  • Marble – Marble can make any home look more stunning and luxurious. You can use it for countertops in the kitchen or bathroom, or use it as accent pieces in the living room, such as a side table or marble clock. You can even use marble wallpaper or fabric to really make a statement!
  • Jewel Tones – Homeowners tend to appreciate neutral colors with a subtle amount of color added as an accent. Jewel tones are appealing to owners right now, from pastel shades to emerald greens and violets. The colors make a statement while still blending with natural outdoor hues.
  • Metallic – The contemporary home style shows a lot of metallic details with minimal accessories. These also add shimmer and can dress up a space. Examples include brass hardware on kitchen cabinets, a silver chandelier in the dining or family room, or outdoors, copper rain gutters or address numbers.
  • Subway Tiles – This sleek and urban look can be incorporated best in the kitchen and bathrooms, and is versatile enough to fit into numerous design styles. Go with dark grout to hide the dirt that may become visible. For a twist, install matte glass subway tiles!
  • Nailhead Details – This isn’t for everyone, but this style is making a comeback with furniture. If you love shopping at antique or thrift stores, you might find a great older piece that suits the modern appeal! Look for headboards or sofas with a nailhead design.

For more examples of trending home decorations and designs, check out this RISMedia article. Which of these is your favorite? Which is your least favorite? Leave a comment and share!

Like I said, sometimes by adding trendy decorations to your Katy home, you could attract more Katy homebuyers when you go to sell. Some could even increase your home value, such as marble and subway tile upgrades in the kitchen. However, it’s important to also realize that home design is a very personal thing, so if you go overboard, you could also turn away buyers or decrease your home value! Only add what most appeals to you, or what will increase your home value if selling in the near future.

Ready to sell your Katy home? Ready to buy a Katy home? No matter what your goals are in the Katy real estate market, I am here to help you achieve them! Contact me, your Katy real estate agent, and let’s start working toward your goal before summer’s end!

Katy is a city located in Harris, Fort Bend and Waller Counties in the U.S. state of Texas, within the Houston–Sugar Land–Baytown metropolitan area. The population was 11,775 at the 2000 census.

Katy, suburb of Houston, Texas, is named for the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad (commonly referred to as the "K-T Railroad", now a part of Union Pacific) that ran through Katy in the 19th century. Katy was once known as Cane Island. The name is derived from Cane Island Creek which runs just west of downtown. Cane Creek is a branch of Buffalo Bayou. The origins of the name Cane Island are believed to be from the fact that Katy was once a major sugar cane producer and rice producer. To commermorate the importance of rice to the Katy community, the Chamber of Commerce holds the Rice Harvest Festival every second weekend of October.

Katy was recently the location of one of the ten large red balloons in the DARPA Network Challenge on December 5, 2009. The balloon was stationed in Katy Park.

In 2009 the Gadberry Group named Katy as one of nine "9 from 2009" most notable high growth areas in the United States.
After a low income apartment complex was proposed for development in an adjacent unincorporated area, in 2010 the Katy City Council passed a resolution stating that the development would decrease property values.[5] The plans for the complex were canceled.
