Back-to-school events in Katy, TX this month

With back-to-school time upon us in Katy, TX, you can expect many events and activities taking place to include this theme. Whether you’re preparing your kids for the school year, or you’re reaping as many summertime activities as you can while they last, there is an event coming up for you. As your Katy real estate agent, allow me to fill you in on a few, so that you can plan the rest of your August and summer accordingly!

  • Chick-fil-A is hosting a Back to School event tonight at their Mason Road location. From 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., kids can craft a bookmark for their school books, take back-to-school pictures in a photo booth, and enjoy complimentary face painting and balloon animals.
  • Saturday, Aug. 19, the Taylor High School JET Marching Band will host their March-a-Thon with new locations this year! From 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., they’ll perform at THS Parking Garage, Randalls, Wolfe, Memorial Parkway, Exley, Hayes and Pattison Elementary Schools, and Epiphany Catholic Church.
  • Saturday evening, head to LaCenterra at Cinco Ranch for Movie on the Green. ‘Thor,’ rated PG-13, will begin at dusk. Bring lawn chairs or a picnic table, pack a picnic if you choose, and enjoy the movie from Marvel Comics about the immortal cast down to Earth to save the world from his evil brother.
  • A Back to School Bash & School Supply Drive will take place at Cane Island on Saturday from 2 to 6 p.m. Enjoy live country and rock music, and chicken, ice cream and beer from local venues. Schools supplies are being accepted until the event, so help out with a great cause!
  • Head to the football field at Taylor High School on Aug. 25 for the JET Band Community Food Truck Fest from 5 to 8 p.m. JET Band will perform and food trucks will be available for you to purchase a variety of food from. Bring lawn chairs and enjoy the music will you eat!
  • TaD’s Extreme Cars and Coffee is a fun way to spend a Saturday morning! Stop by Tad’s of Katy on Aug. 26 from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. to enjoy classic cars, big trucks and exotic vehicles. Munch on breakfast sandwiches, beignets, mimosa and coffee while you view.
  • Sign up for the Katy Back to School 5K on Monday, Sept. 4, beginning at 7 a.m. Run the 5K and help benefit Katy Students Run. This will be a chipped timed race, and winners and top finishers in different age groups will win awards! Enjoy the after-party when done racing.

Back-to-school activities in Katy, TX

Back-to-school time is hectic for everyone in Katy, TX. Parents run around, picking up forgotten school supplies and new clothes, kids find their way around new schools and meet new teachers and classmates, and everyone in the family readjusts their schedules to fit everyone else’s needs.

As your Katy real estate agent, I want to point out that the city of Katy also has some great back-to-school activities for your kids, for you, or for your entire family to participate in. Now that the kids have been back in school for a bit, here’s a list of upcoming events and activities to enjoy together:

  • Tonight, head to Chick-fil-A on Mason Road for Family Night: Core Essentials – Obedience. This is a character values program that teaches kids how to treat others right, how to make smart decisions, and how to maximize their potential. The free event includes a horse craft, face painting and balloon animals and runs from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
  • Are your older kids back to school, leaving you with just a baby or toddler? Head to Heritage Square at LaCenterra on Thursday, Sept. 1, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. for a free stroller fitness class! All fitness levels are welcome. This is a great way to get back into shape while transporting your young one around. Another class is available Saturday, Sept. 3, from 8:45 to 9:45 a.m.
  • Moms and dads deserve a break from the chaos of back-to-school time. That’s why DEFINE Body & Mind in Katy is offering a Free Rev-Ride and Mimosa Toast on Thursday, Sept. 1, at 9:45 a.m. Drop off your kids and then join the indoor cycling class for free, with a mimosa afterward. Be sure to sign up!
  • Need to unwind after a crazy week of school and work? Head to Heritage Square at LaCenterra on Friday, Sept. 2 from 5 to 7 p.m. for free live music! Shinolah will be playing classic rock, dance, R&B and country. Pack chairs or a blanket, bring snacks, and wear your dancing shoes! This is a family-friendly event.

Try to enjoy this transitional time with your family as schedules and calendars change. Katy does a great job at providing events and activities that make it easy for you to do so. Enjoy your Labor Day holiday weekend as well!

Katy is a city located in Harris, Fort Bend and Waller Counties in the U.S. state of Texas, within the Houston–Sugar Land–Baytown metropolitan area. The population was 11,775 at the 2000 census.

Katy, suburb of Houston, Texas, is named for the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad (commonly referred to as the "K-T Railroad", now a part of Union Pacific) that ran through Katy in the 19th century. Katy was once known as Cane Island. The name is derived from Cane Island Creek which runs just west of downtown. Cane Creek is a branch of Buffalo Bayou. The origins of the name Cane Island are believed to be from the fact that Katy was once a major sugar cane producer and rice producer. To commermorate the importance of rice to the Katy community, the Chamber of Commerce holds the Rice Harvest Festival every second weekend of October.

Katy was recently the location of one of the ten large red balloons in the DARPA Network Challenge on December 5, 2009. The balloon was stationed in Katy Park.

In 2009 the Gadberry Group named Katy as one of nine "9 from 2009" most notable high growth areas in the United States.
After a low income apartment complex was proposed for development in an adjacent unincorporated area, in 2010 the Katy City Council passed a resolution stating that the development would decrease property values.[5] The plans for the complex were canceled.
