New Businesses Come to Katy TX!

Living in Katy TX means you’re a part of a vibrant, growing community that has a lot to offer!  As a Katy TX Real Estate agent, I love what I do in helping people buy or sell a home in the Katy TX area, but my goals reach far beyond the real estate market.  I want to ensure those that move to Katy or those who have found themselves living here for years, are experiencing the complete lifestyle that appeals to so many residents.

If you’ve visited my blog in the past, you know that I’ll take time out from real estate tips and Katy TX market advice to showcase what’s happening around town.  In my experience as a Katy TX Real Estate agent, the top questions that buyers have will be in regards to the town, what there is to do, the schools, and overall quality of life.  That’s why I feel it’s important to highlight what’s happening in Katy TX, and today, I thought I would show how Katy continues to grow!

Fort Bend County Expanding Due to Growth!

Fort Bend County is on the move with continuing growth in its’ communities.  As Katy TX and the surrounding cities experience an ever growing population, new businesses and an increasingly attractive quality of life; Fort Bend County is seeking to keep up!

While this is great news, it also means that expansion is necessary in many areas, which includes our roads and highways.  The county is finding that in order to handle the increased traffic and keep our roads safe, construction is vital.

In fact, an expansion of the Westpark Tollway has been in the works for a few years with  behind the scenes with surveys, engineering, mapping reports and other TXDot requirements.  Widening this road from two to four lanes where the tollway becomes FM 1093 will help with the congestion and the possibility of stopping the growth of the county.

In 2004, when the tollway opened, it did its job in taking some of the traffic off of I-10.  Yet, the Westpark Tollway was quickly at capacity and has been needing an expansion for some time now.  Fulshear Mayor Tommy Kuykendall noted that, “Between growth in the subdivisions and communities west of Fulshear, expasion of FM 1093 has become a priority for the city.”

The project is expected to cost around $60 million with the county contributing $10 million and the Fort Bend County Toll Road Authority taking car of $40-50 million.  The Fort Bend County Commissioner Any Meyers said that “the county will eventually recoup their share of the costs through property taxes from development that occurs from more territory being opened up with the expanded road.”  To learn more about the project, construction estimates and more; please visit the Fort Bend County Toll Road Authority website.

The Top Five Reasons to Live in Katy, TX!

As someone who has lived and worked in Katy, TX for many years, I think that it’s safe to say that I’m in love with my community. I really have enjoyed being an active member of the town, and I always make it a point to keep up with the latest happenings in the area. A large part of my responsibility as a Katy, TX real estate agent is to sell my community to people who are looking to relocate here. I need to be able to explain what makes Katy such a great place to live. Thankfully, for me, this has always been an easy task.

When I work with people who are looking for a home in the Katy, TX area, I always point out five things that make the community such a great place to live in. These are some of those selling points:

1.    We have an amazing school system. The Katy Independent School District, or ISD, is one of the best school districts in greater Houston. The growing number of schools is designed to cater to the increasing student population, and with superior facilities and teaching methods, the educational experience is very hands-on and innovative.
2.    Our economy is thriving. Many cities all across the nation have been struggling with their local economy over the last few years. This hasn’t been the case in Katy. We’re home to several world-class business leaders, particularly in the energy sector. We also have a high employment productivity rate, and our unemployment rate is much lower than the national average.
3.    There is a variety of outstanding neighborhoods. Whether you prefer a large, open floor plan or a smaller, more efficient home, there is definitely a property to fit your lifestyle needs in Katy, TX. There is a mixture of older neighborhoods and brand new subdivisions still under development. Our homes are also moderately priced, making them more affordable for the average homebuyer.
4.    We can tickle your taste buds. The variety of dining options in Katy is absolutely amazing. There is always a new restaurant opening, but there are also a few spots that locals have been enjoying for several years. Whether you prefer old-fashioned Texas barbecue or a more ethnic option, you can find something you’ll enjoy around town.
5.    You can fulfill your shopping addiction. One of the best parts about living in Katy is your proximity to many local shopping centers. Whether you choose to stop by the Katy Mills Mall or the more upscale LaCenterra or Villagio, you will find a boutique or outlet store that will fulfill your every need. Whatever the store, chances are you will find it somewhere in town, if you know where to look!

Seven Meadows: Seven Meadows is a Master Planned Community that was developed by the same people who put Cinco Ranch on the map! It is located right off HWY 99 (the Grand Parkway) with short commutes to both I-10 and the Westpark Tollway. Pools, parks, a movie theater, work out facilities, and nature trails are all part of this great community!


Katy is a city located in Harris, Fort Bend and Waller Counties in the U.S. state of Texas, within the Houston–Sugar Land–Baytown metropolitan area. The population was 11,775 at the 2000 census.

Katy, suburb of Houston, Texas, is named for the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad (commonly referred to as the "K-T Railroad", now a part of Union Pacific) that ran through Katy in the 19th century. Katy was once known as Cane Island. The name is derived from Cane Island Creek which runs just west of downtown. Cane Creek is a branch of Buffalo Bayou. The origins of the name Cane Island are believed to be from the fact that Katy was once a major sugar cane producer and rice producer. To commermorate the importance of rice to the Katy community, the Chamber of Commerce holds the Rice Harvest Festival every second weekend of October.

Katy was recently the location of one of the ten large red balloons in the DARPA Network Challenge on December 5, 2009. The balloon was stationed in Katy Park.

In 2009 the Gadberry Group named Katy as one of nine "9 from 2009" most notable high growth areas in the United States.
After a low income apartment complex was proposed for development in an adjacent unincorporated area, in 2010 the Katy City Council passed a resolution stating that the development would decrease property values.[5] The plans for the complex were canceled.
