The Katy Railroad formally was merged into the Union Pacific Railroad system on August 12, 1988. The Texas Department of Transportation bought the old MKT right of way from Union Pacific in 1998, and the line was closed from Katy to Houston in 2000.
Today, the current track ends at Katy Fort Bend RD which is east of downtown Katy, TX. Going West of Katy, TX the track goes through towns Brookshire, TX and connects to Sealy, TX
There are few cement companies in Katy, TX and local Katy lumber companies that used Union Pacific to supply rocks and lumber supplies like Builders First Source

While a newer generation of Kids have never seen steam train, it’s an opportunity of a life time to experience history of trains. Last time steam trains went through Katy, TX was over 80 years ago.
Even though Katy, Texas main train track today is connected east of Katy, TX to Sealy, TX , it’s closed to downtown Houston.
South of Katy, Texas are near by towns Richmond, TX and Rosenberg, TX main train tracks operated by Canada Pacific Kansas City Southern , and Burlington Northern Santa Fe.
For the very first time, some residents from Katy, TX travel to see the steam train in Richmond, TX and Rosenberg, TX in person.
Canada Pacific recently bought Kansas City Southern. To celebrate it’s merger, they reactivate old 1931 steam train called the empress 2816. The train came out Calgary, Canada. It did steam train tour through the USA, and to Mexico City. It’s the first steam train to go through Canada, USA, and Mexico City.
