From deciding which belongings you want to keep to finding the right movers, organizing your move takes time, effort, and is undeniably stressful. Luckily, you can use these tips to make your move as smooth as possible.
Have a Master Plan
Having a defined plan in place can prevent you from overlooking details or getting buried in the moving tasks. It also makes it easier to delegate and manage the tasks and different crews that you’ll be working with. Hence, use a spreadsheet or a calendar to schedule real estate meetings, inspector visits, moving dates, packing deadlines, trash removals, donation pickups, and utility cancellations, among others.
Having a major pre-purge will have a significant impact on the efficiency and ease of the entire packing process. So start clearing clutter the minute you know you’ll move. You could donate or trash items you don’t use to lighten the load – or have a garage sale (and create cash flow while you’re at it). Just keep in mind that the more unused items you eliminate, the less you’ll have to pack, transport, unload, and organize.
Pack and Label Boxes
When packing, start with seasonal clothing, extra décor, keepsakes – anything that you don’t use on a regular basis. Everyday kitchen items and bedding are often the last to be packed. Moreover, use different colored stickers or markers to color-code your boxes. Assign a color to each room and then label your boxes as you pack to easily identify them.
Pack an Essentials Box
The box should contain items that you use daily and those you’ll need immediately after you move. Label the box “pack last” so movers will load it last and unload it first. That way, you don’t have to go unpacking other boxes after your move in order to find your essentials.
Items in your essentials box can include:
- Basic toiletries
- Pet food and supplies
- Change of clothes
- Important documents and credit cards
