Every year it sneaks up on us. One week you are arguing about pool time and the next you are sitting in a car line at 7:15 in the morning wondering how it got here so fast.
Here is the part most people have wrong this year. The first day of school in Katy ISD is Wednesday, August 12, 2026. Not the middle of August. Not “sometime after the 15th.” The 12th. If you have been carrying a fuzzy late-August date around in your head, you just lost a week you thought you had.
And this is not a normal year. The Board amended the calendar back in January, so one of the things on this list did not exist the last time you did back to school.

Now, the seven things.
1. The real deadline is not the 12th
Campus days run the week before school starts. Meet the Teacher, schedule pickup, supply drop off, and orientation for kids changing campuses all land in that window ahead of the first day. Which means your actual scramble deadline is the first week of August, not the second.
Check your campus page now. Every school in the district handles that week a little differently, and the elementary version looks nothing like the junior high version.
2. The paperwork that stops a kid at the door
Immunization records are the number one reason a family has a rough first week. Texas has requirements that change by grade, and 7th grade adds new ones that catch a lot of parents completely off guard. If your child is heading into 7th, handle it this week. Appointment slots at pediatricians and clinics get thin fast in early August, because everyone in Katy is doing this at the same moment.
Same goes for proof of residency if you have moved recently, and anything the campus needs on file for medication, allergies, or a health plan.
3. Transportation is a plan, not an assumption
Bus eligibility, route times, and stop locations do not always look the same as last year, especially if boundaries shifted or you moved within the district. And if you are a car line family, understand that the first two weeks are the worst two weeks of the whole year. Drive the route once at the actual time you will be driving it. You will learn more in that one dry run than in any amount of reading about it.
4. The sleep reset takes longer than one weekend
You cannot fix a summer bedtime on August 11. Kids need roughly two weeks of gradual shifting to land anywhere near a school schedule, and that window is open right now. Fifteen minutes earlier every few nights, and let the mornings move with it. The alternative is a household full of very unpleasant people for the back half of August.
5. NEW THIS YEAR: There is a fall break in October
This is the one almost nobody has caught yet. Katy ISD added a fall break, October 9 through 13, to the 2026-27 calendar. A full stretch off in October that did not exist before.
If both parents work, that is childcare you have not arranged. If you travel, that is a window that is going to fill up fast once the rest of Katy does the math. Look at it in July and you have options. Look at it in late September and you have whatever is left.
6. High school and junior high are almost two hours apart
This is the one that blindsides families with kids at two different levels.
High school: tardy bell at 7:15 a.m., dismissal at 2:35 p.m.
Junior high: tardy bell at 8:55 a.m., dismissal at 4:05 p.m.
That is a hundred minutes apart in the morning and ninety at the end of the day. Your high schooler is in first period before your junior higher is out of bed, and then gets home an hour and a half ahead of them. If you have one of each, you are not running one school morning. You are running two, plus two afternoons.
Elementary is its own puzzle. Katy ISD staggers elementary campuses across three different start times, so yours depends entirely on which school you are zoned to. Do not assume it matches a neighbor’s.

7. Starting school after August 12 is normal here
Katy runs on employer time, not on the school calendar. The companies here move families in and out all year long, which means kids arrive in October and February and April. If a move lands in the middle of the school year, nothing has been missed and your child is not an outlier. Our campuses take in new students constantly, and they are practiced at it in a way that campuses in less transient places simply are not.
Two things matter more than the timing. Confirm the attendance zone before you sign anything, because zones do not always follow subdivision lines and boundaries do get modified. And request records from the previous district early, since that is the piece that actually holds up a start date.
Katy in August is a specific kind of chaos. Hot, loud, a little emotional, and over before you have adjusted to it. The families who get through it well are not the organized ones. They are just the ones who looked at the dates early.
