You Made It, Mama
Dads, you get coffee too.
This is the week. If you are in Sugar Land, Richmond, or Rosenberg, your first bell rings Tuesday, August 11. Katy and Cypress families get one more day, with Katy ISD and Cy-Fair starting Wednesday, August 12. Either way, the lunches are packed, the supply lists are conquered, and sometime in the next 48 hours your house is going to go quiet for the first time since May.
Everybody is writing about the kids this week. This post is not about the kids. This one is about you, the parent who refereed three months of “I’m bored,” drove the summer camp carpool, and still remembered which kid needs the plastic folder with brads and which one needs the one without. You earned this one. And before anyone assumes this is a moms-only club, it is not. Katy has plenty of stay at home dads who ran the exact same three-month marathon, and that first quiet morning belongs to you just as much. Here are seven ways to actually enjoy it.
Take the long way to coffee
Not the drive-thru you slam through on autopilot. Sit down somewhere. Old Katy has gems like Luce Ave Coffee and Humble Grounds Coffeehouse, Serene Beans is worth the trip, and every one of our towns has a local spot where the barista knows the regulars by name. Order the fancy thing. Drink it hot, all the way to the bottom, without sharing.
Run one errand completely alone
You know the one. Target, H-E-B, wherever. No one asking for snacks in aisle four, no negotiating at the checkout candy. Walk every aisle if you feel like it. This is not about what you buy. It is about the silence.
Take back one room
Just one. The playroom that became a fort city, the kitchen counter that became mission control for summer. Not a whole-house deep clean, that is a different kind of day. One room, back to yours, so you have proof the house can look like that again.
Eat lunch that is not a leftover nugget
Meet a friend. Meet your spouse. Dads, this is your moment too, and yes, a quiet solo burger counts as self-care. The first-day lunch date is a tradition hiding in plain sight all over Katy, Sugar Land, Richmond, Rosenberg, and Cypress, and the patios are noticeably full of parents on these exact days every year. There is a reason.
Move a little before Texas melts you
August in the Houston area does not do gentle, so this one is a morning move. A walk right after drop-off, before the heat takes over, resets your whole day. Your neighborhood trail, the park you always drive past, even a few laps somewhere air conditioned. You have been moving for everyone else all summer. Move for you.
Do absolutely nothing for one hour
A nap. A book. A tall glass of iced tea in the air conditioning, because the porch can wait until October. No podcast about being more productive, no folding laundry while you “relax.” One hour where the only thing on your list is nothing. If guilt shows up, remind it that you just ran a three-month summer program with no staff and no budget.
Put one thing on the fall calendar just for you
Before the school-year schedule swallows you whole, claim one thing. A standing coffee date, a class, a monthly dinner with friends, a weekend away. Write it down today while the calendar is still yours. The fall will fill itself in around it, it always does.

Read Before the First BellHowever that first morning looks at your house, happy tears at drop-off or a victory lap out of the parking lot, we hope there is a quiet cup of something good in it for you. You made it. Now go enjoy it.
